Calling SC Singapore Marathon Runners: Nike Freebies are Out

December 2, 2008

As mentioned, Nike will be giving out free Nike attire and shoes to Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon runners who were able to register with Coach Rio.

Click here to confirm if you’re on the list.

According to Coach Rio, you may have registered with him, but due to lack of available sizes for singlets and shoes, your name may not be included in the final list.  Shorts won’t be given out anymore too.

If you’re listed, as I am (woohoo!), you may pick up your items from Coach Rio at Ultra, 6 to 9am and 5 to 9pm, until Thursday.  See you in Singapore!

Singapore Marathon Runners: Get Your Free Nike Uniforms

September 23, 2008

Good news for all those who registered for the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon: Nike is providing 50 uniforms—singlets, shorts, and running shoes—to be worn by Pinoy runners during the Singapore Marathon.  (I’m telling you, we will look like Filipino olympians in them!)

To sign up, email Coach Rio at rio@runrio.com with the following details:

1. Confirmation details from Singapore Marathon (with race bib #)

2. Your full name

3. Your singlet, shorts, and shoe size (Nike sizing)

This is on a first come, first serve basis.  Again, only 50 uniforms available.

————————– UPDATE ————————–

As of Sept. 23, lunchtime (yes, the same day I posted this), Coach Rio informed me that the slots for the 50 runners were full. So sorry.

Reserve Your Nike Lunar Trainers Now

September 12, 2008

NikeLunar

There’s been a lot of buzz around this shoe, the Nike Lunar Trainers, even if it isn’t out in the market yet. There was the Nike Lunar Test Run we had last August. And I read about Runwitme‘s similar experience in Malaysia.  Plus, Jeannette Wang‘s positive experience using it when she won the Singapore Sundown Ultramarathon (84km) with a time of 9.5 hours.

The Lunar Trainers are set for a limited release this October 2008—meaning the distribution of this shoe is not massive and not a on a wide scale like other Nike shoes—while bulk of these will go on full blast in early 2009.

For those of you who would like to reserve a pair of Lunars (retails at P4,995), below are the contact numbers of Nike outlets.  Nike says there are only 18 pairs each for men and women per outlet, except at Nike Bonifacio High Street where there are 30 pairs for men and 18 for women:

Black Cat, I-Np Glorietta 729.14.73 / 813.00.82

Nike Park – Greenbelt3 757.44.91

Nike Park – Sm Moa 556.07.89

Nike Park – The Fort 856.25.86 / 856.25.87

Nike Park – North Triangle 901.35.47

While you were recovering from your Nike+ Human Race race a couple of days ago, you may have been sipping your morning coffee while browsing through the Sunday papers. If you had Phil. Daily Inquirer, you may have read Ms. Tessa Prieto-Valdez’s column which featured the race and the Nike Lunar Testing…

Zoom in on the photo above and you may just find a few familiar faces in there…

To Tessa Valdez, thank you for the feature! Best of luck in NY Marathon. And, if or when I see you in another race, I hope I’ll finally have the guts to say HI!

Nike Lunar Test Run

August 22, 2008

IMG_0141

Last Saturday, I was fortunate enough to be one of those invited to test the new Nike Lunar Trainer at Bonifacio High Street. It was a reunion of sorts as friends from the running world (I won’t name names since I’m bound to forget someone!) showed up eager as I was to try out Nike’s newest shoe. Of course, the celebrities were there too, such as triathletes Drew Arellano and Paolo Cabrera and Tessa Prieto who I’ve read is currently training for NY Marathon.

After our costume change (Runaholic singlets, dri-fit socks, and the Nike Lunar Trainers were distributed like candies on Halloween), the test run’s organizer, Coach Rio, beckoned for us to run loops around BHS together. At an easy pace, we ran chatting, laughing, and exchanging stories that only runaholics like us could truly appreciate. After a couple of loops, there was a brief presentation about the features of Nike Lunar Trainers, which got its name from the lunar system encased inside the shoe (lunar foam with piston waffles).

Since Saturday, I’ve used the shoe twice which is enough for me to give an honest evaluation of this shoe:

PROS

  1. Ultra light: This was the lightest shoe I have ever worn. After running in them, you might look at your feet once in a while to wonder if you actually forgot to wear the shoes; it feels as if you’re just wearing socks.
  2. Super fast: Oh, I felt invincible when I wore them last night. My regular pace for short runs is 6:00 to 6:15 min/km. Last night, I was surprised to find myself running at 5:30 without extra effort.
  3. Very stable: It’s wide so I felt like it protected me from my usual overpronation problem.
  4. Great fit: This shoe is all about comfort. It was soft and snug; I cannot imagine anyone getting blisters from this one.
CONS
  1. Lunar look: I’m all for new and unique designs, but the bright green color and the wide outer sole of this shoe just made me wish I could run with my eyes closed.
  2. Too soft: I could feel the cushioning underneath; one can almost feel a spring-like action once your feet hit the ground. But, after 2km, my left foot (my left is the forever injured, annoying leg) was feeling the brunt of the way too soft sole.
  3. Not for my shins: The marketing guy in Nike mentioned that the shoe could be used by flat-footed runners and I felt as if he was talking directly to me at that time. I should’ve raised my hand to ask if it was fine for flat-footed, overpronating runners with shin splints because, after using the shoe twice, I felt slight pain on my shins both times. Fortunately, the minor pain immediately subsided the day after.
As mentioned in Runner’s World Sept 2008 issue, it is “recommended for the few biomechanically efficient runners who can train in such a minimal, lightweight shoe.”  Biomechanically efficient? That, my dear friends, much to my dismay and misfortune, I am definitely not.

Win a Nike+ SportBand – TBR “Race” Details

August 11, 2008

TBRrace

TBR is all set to launch the TBR “Race” series, wherein the winner of each race will be awarded with his/her very own Nike+ SportBand (retail price of P3,195).

 Nike_Plus_SportBand

The races will not be actual races (uhm, I don’t have the budget for that), but they will be held on this blog.  You must be fit and fast (actually, only your fingers have to be in tip-top shape) to compete in these races.  Only the top 20 commenters will be eligible to win the prizes.

[ RACE DETAILS ]

  1. TBR will post a fill-in-the-blank sentence (Ex.: My name is _______.)
  2. Runners will fill in the blank and post it in the comments section below (Ex. My name is The Bull Runner.)
  3. The first 20 runners to post their answers will be eligible to win the raffle for the Nike+ SportBand and discount coupons.
  4. TBR’s favorite answer (for its humor, creativity, or wit) will receive 4 additional raffle entries regardless of its place in the race.  In other words, that commenter, even if he/she didn’t make it to the Top 20, will automatically be included in the race raffle and gain 4 additional entries.
  5. Race participants may only submit one answer per race.  Runner who submits more than once in one race will automatically be disqualified.  No cheaters allowed here.
  6. Race participants may only win once.
  7. Raffle will be done under the supervision of a TBR Representative, specifically my little Bull Runners.
  8. Winners must claim their prizes.  I will not deliver them to you.  Duh.
  9. Runners who join the TBR race must have real and serious intentions of participating in the Nike+ Human Race on 08.31.08 and currently do not have the Nike+ Kit or SportBand.  If you don’t plan to join the Nike+ Human Race, please step aside and give other runners a chance.
  10. TBR reserves the right to change race rules anytime during the course of these races.

[ RACE SCHEDULE ]

Exact time and date of TBR races will NOT be announced.  I may post more than one race in a day.  Or none at all in 2 days.  I may wake up at 5 a.m.—just like in a real race—to fire the gun and see all participants run off towards the finish.

Here are the only details I’ll give:

Race No. 1: 1 winner of a Nike+ SportBand

Race No. 2: 1 winner of a Nike+ SportBand

Race No. 3: 1 winner of a Nike+ SportBand

Race No. 4: 1 winner of a Nike+ SportBand

Race No. 5: 1 winner of a Nike+ SportBand

Race No. 6: 10 winners of 20% discount coupon for Nike+ SportBand

I’ll be posting the 1st race soon.  Lace up your virtual shoes and get ready!
